What Are Grass Straws Made Of?

A grey sedge grass named Lepironia Articulata is commonly used to make straws since it is a naturally hollow plant that may be utilized without modification. This grass that grows along the Mekong Delta region in southwest Vietnam is locally referred to as "Cỏ Bàng."

What Size Is A Regular Grass Straw?

Grass straws are usually about 15 - 20 cm in length, have an inner diameter of approximately 4 – 8 mm, and a thickness of around 0,5 – 0,8 mm (depending on different manufacturing factories).

Common Type Of Grass Straw

There are mainly 2 types of grass straws: fresh grass straws and dried grass straws. Dried grass straws can be kept until 6 months, while the other is around 1 - 2 weeks depending on temperature conditions.

How To Make Grass Straws?

Step #1: Harvesting raw materials

Farmers carefully choose and harvest manually plant stalks.

Step #2: Outer cleaning & preliminary treatment

After harvesting, the plant stalks are soaked in specialized concoctions for disinfection. After that, wash the plant stalks with water and cut them into straw-sized tubes – lengths measuring 20 centimeters (about 8 inches).

Step #3: Inner cleaning

Use an iron rod to thoroughly clean the inner of semi-finished straws, remove the intestine horizontal and velvet surface inside, and then wash again.

Step #4: Drying and ultraviolet irradiation

The fresh grass straws are dried under the sun for 3-5 hours, then put into the drying machine to make dried grass straws.

Step #5: Quality checking & testing

Step #6: Final packaging
